Epimedium

After mine were established -- it took three or four years -- they were lovely. I wanted to grow a small patch again, in the red rock mulch under one of the pine trees to catch the morning sunlight.

I ordered 10 'Frohnleiten' from Avant Gardens. Nine failed immediately. One took. They are not suitable for here even though they do like dry shade. But even in shade the thin papery leaves transpire too quickly in extremely dry air and they turned to potato chips right away.

One does live on in all day shade. But I'll never have the beautiful stand under a tree like this:
