These big spreaders were here when we bought the house. There are three -- one is in front under the pine in mostly shade, and the other two flank the driveway under the cottonwood.

They get no water, and in the very dry first year simply survived, looking green all year. When we got some snow and rain the second year they looked really good the following summer, dark green an lush.

I don't do anything with them, no pruning or tending at all, and they are beautiful green anchors in the gravel front and side yards. They do collect all kinds of leaves that are hard to clean out, though.
