Koreanspice Viburnum, possibly 'Compactum'?
Photos
I'm pretty sure the shrub already planted here by the deck is a Koreanspice viburnum. I have seen it for sale in a local nursery, and the shrub had to have been planted recently, just before we moved in I think. If it is 'Compactum', it will stay about 3 feet tall, which is suitable for this small space at the edge of the deck.
It blooms in mid to late April. Fragrance is light but noticeable.
At first it was scraggly and only produced a couple blooms. But with watering and tending it has become a lovely shrub.
In 2022 spring was mild and the shrub was beautiful. Fragrance, for the first time, was noticeable and heady. Lovely!

April 2022 |
In 2021 it got a slow start due to April's very cold nights and chill winds in the daytime. It bloomed in mid April, but looked a bit thin, with leaves not really flushed out and very small flowers.

But by the end of April it was looking fuller, and the shape was lovely. The flowers had a wonderful fragrance, not as perfume as last year, and quite delicate.

In 2020 it bloomed in mid April and was fragrant,
quite perfumey, but still, nice. But the snow and cold nights we had on April 14 and 15 stunted the flowers a bit. They are not as round and pretty as last year.

The blooms actually look a bit browned by the early freeze. But still, very nice.

In 2019 it bloomed beautifully after my rescue efforts in 2018. Fragrant. Pretty round balls of blooms.

It was tiny and stressed when we first moved in and I did not see any evidence of berries or flowers.

Fall 2017 |
There are so many viburnums, it's hard to tell which one this is, but based on local availability, the pinkish buds (now that it is blooming in 2019 after being rescued from drought) -- and based on the leaf shape and color. . . . I'm pretty sure this is viburnum carlesii.

early April 2018 |
By the
third week in April the rosy bud clusters open white. There was some scent but not much.
There were only two blossoms the first spring, in 2018 -- I had rejuvenated this shrub when I first saw it all leggy and sparse from lack of water last fall. In 2019 it's a lovely fuller shape, but I sacrificed flowers.

Koreanspice viburnum is described as having muddy red or maroon fall color, but it's variable each year.

November 11, 2019 -- some jewel tones |
In 2020, after heavy snow and some hard freezes at night, there just wasn't any color, well into mid November.
|
November 16, 2020 -- no real color this year. |
But by Thanksgiving week it had turned a rich, dark wine color, hard to really see unless the sun was on the leaves.
