Cholla / Cylindropuntia

Tree Cholla / Cylindropuntia imbricata

This was growing in the front yard next to some dwarf chamisas when we moved in. It was a dessert planting in the gravel. I added a pot in the center, but later changed this around when the chamisas declined and I moved the pot.

It blooms suddenly after a good rain in spring. The flowers are a vivid magenta.

The flowers morph into yellow fruits, that kind of look like blooms themselves and that stay on the plant for a long time.

You have to stay far away from the spines of this cholla. It's a plant I never would have chosen, but it was here and it's kind of cool. It might get really big, though. Already in the few years we've been here it's grown quite a bit.
