Maximilian Sunflower / Helianthus maximiliani
PhotosExpectations:
These want moisture but not soggy soil. They don't bloom until September.
They will live in a dry season but will be shorter and sparse and bloom less. These do much better with water -- let them dry out in between, but given them plenty of water.
They are not the big dinner platter sunflower disks, but more of a daisy type flower on tall stalks.
Experiences:
There were lots of these growing in the common area next to our driveway and in wet springs they came up beautifully.Over the years I bought several from the Waterwise plant sale to make a strip along the garage, and in 2020 I got two from Plants of the Southwest and added them to the driveway strip at the fence, behind the sedum and kniphofia there.
The plants along the garage, except for the big clump at the very corner, don't do well. It's too dry. I need to take them out and plant something there that likes it harsh and dry.
