Kinnikinnik / Arctostaphylos

Arctostaphylos uva-ursi x coloradensis 'Panchito'
From Plants of the Southwest spring 2024

Arctostaphylos uva-ursi 'Massachusetts' (Bearberry Manzanita)
From Lowe's spring 2020 - These came out in spring 2022

Expectations:
'Panchito' is a native kinnikinnik (manzanita) that is very cold hardy.

The tag says full sun but sources also say it wants partial or afternoon shade. It definitely needs well draining soil. Root rot in moist soil is the biggest problem.

Experiences:
'Panchito' is tucked into the dining room window garden between the Japanese maple and the mock orange. There may not be enough room there, but it grows slowly, so we'll see.

I got the 'Massachusetts' Arctostaphylos uva-ursi at Lowes's and I bought three. They went under the Spanish broom in essentially no soil, just some added compost and gravel rocks.

In fall 2021 when the Spanish broom was taken out and soil added to make a new garden, I re-planted the three small plants in front of some moss rocks by the fence, essentially where they were when the broom was there. But they did not survive into 2022 and were taken out.
